St. Petersburg, United States - September 14, 2020 /PressCable/ —
Sunshine City Counseling has announced the availability of its Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) counseling service. This type of counseling is specifically targeted at men and women who have experienced trauma.
Details can be found at https://www.sunshinecitycounseling.com/trauma-counseling
The recently announced service is being offered by licensed Clinical Social Worker Lindsey Epperson. According to this therapist, individuals who experience trauma have feelings of helplessness along with feelings of abandonment at the hands of potentially protective caregivers.
The counseling center explains that characteristics of individuals who would’ve experienced trauma at some point in their lives include feelings of frustration and being easily angered, difficulty returning to a calm state of mind, restlessness, and difficulty remaining in a stable relationship. Traumatized individuals have also reported being easily triggered during sex, feeling easily ashamed over past misdeeds done by or to them, and feeling more pronounced anger and anxiety that a situation warrants.

Given the understanding of trauma, Epperson aims, through the counseling service, to help individuals who struggle with trauma-related issues such as getting back calm and rest, having healthy interpersonal relationships, and receiving kindness, care and comfort from others.
EMDR therapy works well for those who have a history of trauma and/or are struggling with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
Studies show that EMDR is thought to be an effective therapeutic method since recalling distressing events is often less emotionally upsetting when one’s attention is diverted. It is also one of if not the most evidenced based therapeutic modality having been in practice for over 30 years.

During EMDR counseling sessions, therapists attempt to focus their clients’ attention on three time periods: the past, present, and future. According to experts in the field, focus is first given to past disturbing memories and related events after which current events, that cause distress, are addressed. Therapists then help clients develop those skills and attitudes needed for positive future actions and outcomes.
Despite the assumption that severe emotional pain requires a long time to heal, EMDR therapy has been proven to help one’s mind heal from psychological trauma in a shorter time than expected. Given the three focal time points for EMDR therapy, the sessions generally take place in eight phases.
Sunshine City’s Counseling team prides itself on helping clients walk away with actionable tools, a sense of peace, calmness, and a feeling of wholeness. Lindsey provides online counseling services for those who live in Florida and Georgia as well as in person counseling sessions for those who wish to visit Sunshine City Counseling in their downtown St. Petersburg, FL location.
