Pathfinders Recovery Center Explains: What Does Meth Look Like

August 02, 2022 - /PressAdvantage/ - Pathfinders Recovery Center, based in Scottsdale, AZ, has released a number of online resources to provide helpful information for the families and loved ones of people struggling with an addiction. They have released an article that describes what does meth look like. Another article presents some books recommended to parents of substance abusers. And lastly, they have provided a resource describing the smell of certain illegal drugs so that the families and loved ones can increase their chances of detecting whether their loved one is abusing drugs.

Methamphetamine or meth happens to be one of the most notorious addictive substances in the US. Meth is a stimulant, which means that it speeds up the activity of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. It also speeds up the activity rate in the sympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for triggering involuntary activation of a person’s “fight or flight” response. Thus, meth affects the heart rate, blood pressure, core body temperature, digestive system, and the level of sweat production.

It is important to note that not all meth looks the same. Meth is usually available in three forms: crystal, powder, and base. Meth crystal is, of course, in crystalline form and is translucent but it may also have a more solid, whitish color. Meth powder, which is also known as speed, usually has a whitish or off-white color. It may also be compacted to produce pills. Meth base is yellow, brown or white and with an oily or damp texture.

Meanwhile, their article on books for parents of substance abusers is designed to help parents better understand what is happening to their loved one. Reading books provides an excellent way for parents to educate themselves about substance abuse problems and addiction. Possible sources of useful information come from public health experts, addiction specialists, other parents who have experienced similar situations, and books and articles from the substance recovery community.

Parents need to remember that all children who take drugs are at risk of developing an addiction. And those who get addicted are no longer taking drugs of alcohol willingly. Instead, they have developed a chronic brain disorder that results into involuntary substance use. A key authority is the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), which has a resource directed towards parents and teachers. NIDA also has several publications, including the short book, “Principles of Drug Addiction Treatment - A Research-Based Guide.”

Meanwhile, parents and loved ones of people struggling with a drug addiction can also find it easier to detect if a child may be using drugs by knowing what drugs may smell like. While not all drugs have a unique odor and not all kinds of drugs have the same smell, by knowing that drugs can possibly smell like, parents can increase the odds of detecting them. For instance, heroin is a drug that can smoked and it may emit a sharp, acidic smell. An odor like that of household vinegar may also be detected. However, it is important to remember that the odor may vary. The odor of cocaine powder may vary, depending on the chemicals employed to process it, such as ether or kerosene. A substance common in drugs, for which drug dogs have been trained to detect, is methyl benzoate, which is an odor that resembles that of fruit or flowers. When smoke, meth may smell like burning plastic or household cleaners.
