"A death can be entirely expected from a legal standpoint and still leave a family with no idea what actually happened medically. That gap is where we work."
Timing matters as much as access. For families working against probate deadlines, insurance filing windows, or civil claims governed by fixed limitation periods, an independent autopsy in Salt Lake City can be booked directly and delivered on an agreed schedule.
Record access is a third consideration. Utah statute shields medical examiner files from open release. Attorneys who want them must first establish standing, ordinarily through written authorization from the legal next of kin, appointment by a court as representative of the estate, or a subpoena or order issued by a judge. An examination commissioned privately produces a report that belongs to the family or their counsel from day one.
