Forest & Ray Explains the Wisdom Tooth Removal Procedure that They Can Perform

May 05, 2023 - /PressAdvantage/ - Forest and Ray - Dentists, Orthodontists, Implant Surgeons, which is based in London, UK, has recently detailed the private wisdom tooth removal procedure that they provide in Holborn, Camden, Central London. The procedure is typically done for patients with a wisdom tooth that is painful and uncomfortable. In some cases, the procedure might be needed because there is not enough space for the wisdom tooth to grow properly and it gets stuck within the jaw. In other cases, the wisdom tooth is growing at an angle and it is pushing against the other molars, resulting into pain, inflammation, and problems with bite.

A spokesperson for the London dental practice says, “Private wisdom tooth extraction can be a surgical operation to remove one or more wisdom teeth — the four permanent adult teeth located in the upper and lower rear corners of your mouth. If a wisdom tooth lacks space to erupt (impacted wisdom tooth) and causes discomfort, infection, or other dental issues, it will likely need to be extracted. The extraction of wisdom teeth may be performed by a dentist or an oral surgeon.”

An impacted wisdom tooth is one that doesn’t have sufficient space to grow and the result is pain, discomfort, infection, and other dental problems. There are a number of indicators of an inflamed wisdom tooth, such as: pain the mouth or jaws; swelling of the face; and difficulty in opening the mouth. Some oral surgeons and dentists may also recommend wisdom tooth extraction even if the impacted wisdom tooth is not causing any issues at the present time. This is to avoid an possible complications in the future.

They point out that they will only extract the wisdom tooth when it is not inflamed. Thus, if it is swollen including the face and the patient is experiencing a lot of pain, they advise the patient to visit the office for a check up and they may recommend medication for temporary pain relief. Once the swelling has subsided, they can proceed with the wisdom tooth extraction.

If the wisdom tooth is found to be fully erupted, a general dentist can perform the extraction. The procedure will start with a panoramic x-ray and a consultation with a general dentist. The treatment will be fast and may only require local anesthesia. However, if the wisdom tooth has been growing irregularly, is angled away or toward the nearby tooth, or is horizontally positioned, the extraction has to be done by an oral surgeon because the procedure would be more complicated. In this procedure, the oral surgeon makes a small incision on the gum, extracts the wisdom tooth, and then sutures the wound. It is also done using a local anesthetic.

The team at the Forest & Ray clinic will only provide local anesthesia and not sedation, which needs an intravenous (IV) line to the arm. This is because IV sedation has to be performed in a hospital. When their dentist or oral surgeon performs the wisdom tooth extraction, they will administer the local anesthesia through one or more injections near the location of the extraction.
