The Church of Scientology South Africa in Castle Kyalami reports its activities to its Board in conclusion of International Overdose Awareness Day.
Kyalami, Midrand - September 14, 2023 —
The Church of Scientology South Africa in Castle Kyalami reports its activities to its Board in conclusion of International Overdose Awareness Day. The “International Overdose Awareness Day”, a global event held in August of each year since 2001, has as its purpose to raise awareness of overdoses, reduce the stigma of drug-related deaths and acknowledge the grief felt by families and friends.
Turning this day into a full month of awareness activities, the Church of Scientology conclusively reported to its Board on its Drug-Free World lectures, seminars, presentations and booklet distributions done for the whole month of August, by a large variety of groups all throughout South Africa and other African countries, to educate youths and adults on the devastatingly harmful effects of drugs.
The Foundation for a Drug-Free World, a nonprofit, international drug education program, is proudly sponsored by the Church of Scientology and Scientologists all over the world.
Concerned with the continental-wide scourge and rampage of drug overdose, abuse, and drug-related crimes such as trafficking, sexual assault and murder to name a few, South African and African volunteers vigorously hit the ground running reaching over 13,000 youths and adults with drug education lectures and distributing thousands of Truth About Drugs booklets throughout South Africa and Zimbabwe, as well as Swaziland, Tanzania, Nigeria, Burundi, Uganda and Botswana.
“Drug-Free World is our largest campaign in Africa and it continues to grow exponentially”, says Asthra Maximov Director of Social Reform for Africa. “Drugs is a serious issue in many African countries and it is very impressive how much our volunteers will band together to really tackle this situation with both hands and demand others to do the same”, Maximov further adds. “Our founder L. Ron Hubbard inspires me to continue taking a leading role in preventing illicit and mind-altering drugs from taking over our society and getting into the hands of the more vulnerable, such as our youths. This is just scandalous to me. This is why I take great pride in what I do in advocating education about the harmful effects of drugs, so we can build a better Mzanzi”.

“Our Drug-Free World groups and volunteers in Gauteng were very inspired to embark on anti-drug activities for International Overdose Awareness Day”, says Kabelo Kgosana, New Civilisation Officer at Castle Kyalami. “Volunteers in SAPS Youth Crime Prevention Desk and several NGOs busily organized Truth About Drugs booklet distributions, seminars, school lectures and presentations, all with the purpose of spreading the drug-free message”, Kgosana added. “I am very proud of my groups around the Kyalami area and beyond. As our Founder L. Ron Hubbard envisioned that our children will become tomorrows’ civilisation, I believe that educating the youth about the adverse effects of drugs is vital for our own future”.
Maximov says that so far this year her anti-drug groups in South Africa and the rest of Africa have helped over 285,000 people to be aware of drug effects and its consequences. “We save lives”. She affirms that South African and African Drug-Free World volunteers are ever-so-proud of their work and they continue to encourage others in living drug-free lives.
“Our Drug-Free World volunteers are very important people”, said T. Nyashanu, Drug-Free World coordinator in Bulawayo. “Their efforts have seen communities benefitting throughout Bulawayo. I am truly honored to get this opportunity to train volunteers from different communities, on implementing the Drug-Free World programme in their area. We need to empower ourselves with necessary skills to survive through the effects of drugs”, Nyashanu added. “l would like to thank the Foundation For a Drug-Free World in Africa, for servicing our work with drug-education materials. This has enabled us to offer quality services to both communities and volunteers. And all of this is made possible by the opportunity we are given by The Church of Scientology, to empower people and sharpen their minds for this world we now live in ''.
