Four of the best SUVs priced between $20k and $40k
(PRUnderground) September 20th, 2021
The popularity of crossovers and SUVs has steadily increased over the past few years and doesn’t show signs of slowing down. But as these cars are stacked with conveniences, comfort features, and capable engines, they often cost a pretty penny. Still, there are some brilliant options for those with tight budgets. Here are four of the best SUVs you can get for under $40k.
Top Choices For Under $25k
Subaru Crosstrek
With a starting price of around $23k for the base model, the Subaru Crosstrek offers affordable adventuring in a genuinely capable slight-sized package. For 2021 it comes with a new optional 2.5-liter engine that produces 182 horsepower, and with all-wheel drive as standard, useful ground clearance, and a fuss-free cabin, the Crosstrek is perfect for those who want to brave the outdoors without having to take out a second mortgage. Read any Subaru Crosstrek review and you’ll see it doubles as a really excellent daily driver too, with a comfortable ride and a Top Safety Pick title from the IIHS.
Chevrolet Equinox
For a price that’s only a few hundred bucks more than the Crosstrek, the compact SUV from Chevrolet makes a name for itself with a very comprehensive standard safety feature list, a relatively fuel-efficient engine, and a user-friendly infotainment system. The Chevy Equinox starts at just under $24k, and although it’s not quite as engaging or sporty as some of its rivals, it’s a good value proposition for those looking for a reliable family carrier. A fresh, updated version is expected in the near future.
Top Choices For Under $35k
VW Atlas
With a starting MSRP of around $32k, this is a lot of car for a reasonable amount of money. Browse through any Volkswagen Atlas review and you’ll see that this large barge is extremely spacious and is ideal for those long-haul trips with the family. It also has plenty of standard features and comes in a variety of configurations, and although it’s not the best performer on the market in terms of acceleration and outright power, it serves its purpose as a comfortable cruiser.
Top Choices For Under $40k
Acura RDX
Going on sale from around $38,400 for the entry-level model and topping out at over $46k for the top-end variant, the Acura RDX is a sporty yet luxurious crossover with excellent build quality, an elegant interior, and a balanced ride. It also has a feisty new PMC Edition in the lineup for 2021. The turbocharged engine is a hoot, with 272 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque on tap, and a towing capacity of 4,000 lbs.
