Unlike conventional space posters that present the Moon primarily as a decorative image, The Moon Exploration Map approaches Earth's closest celestial neighbor as a real place that has been studied, mapped, visited, and explored for decades. The map combines the qualities of a scientific reference, historical timeline, and piece of space-inspired wall art, giving viewers an opportunity to follow the story of lunar exploration while discovering the landscape where that history unfolded.

“The Moon has always fascinated us, but we felt that most people experience it simply as something they see in the night sky. We wanted to show the Moon as a real place — a world that humans have been actively exploring for decades,” says Sandra, co-founder of 55-maps. “There is an incredible story of exploration behind it. We wanted to turn that story into something people could actually see, explore and admire on their wall.”

The map brings together milestones from across the history of lunar exploration, from the earliest robotic missions and the Apollo era to more recent missions such as Chandrayaan-3, while also looking toward the next generation of Moon exploration. By placing missions within the geography of the lunar surface, 55-maps aims to give viewers a clearer sense of where key events happened and how humanity's understanding of the Moon has developed over time.

The Moon Exploration Map builds on the studio's previous Great Explorers Map Collection, which visualized the journeys of Christopher Columbus, Amerigo Vespucci, and Ferdinand Magellan, including their routes, destinations, and the historical context surrounding their expeditions. The project helped establish 55-maps' approach to combining exploration, history, research, and cartography, and inspired the team to take the same storytelling concept beyond Earth.

“The idea for the Moon map became especially strong after the last solar eclipse,” adds Sandra. “Seeing how much excitement and curiosity the eclipse generated reminded us just how fascinated people are by our closest celestial neighbor. It made us think about the Moon not just as something beautiful in the sky, but as a world that we have actually visited, mapped and explored.”
