Toledo Dystonia Zoo Walk supports dystonia research treatment

The first Toledo Dystonia Zoo Walk will be held on October 5th to raise public awareness of dystonia.

Toledo, OH (Merxwire) – Toledo is one of 13 cities that will have a dystonia zoo walk in 2019. The Toledo Dystonia Zoo Walk will be held on October 5th to let everyone know that dystonia is a disabling and unrecognized neurological disease and supports the Dystonia Medical Research Foundation to conduct research to promote the treatment of individuals and families affected by the disease. And program progress.

The Toledo Dystonia Zoo Walk is a family-friendly event that doesn’t require intense exercise and does not have the necessary routes. Encourage everyone to spend the day at the zoo and enjoy everything that the Toledo Zoo has to offer. The zoo hopes to unite families with dystonia and invite more communities to understand dystonia and support medical research. National sponsors include Allergan, Merz and Ipsen.

Dystonia is characterized by extreme, involuntary muscle contractions that result in twisting, repetitive muscle movements and abnormal postures of the body and limbs.  Common signs include twisting or abnormal movements of the head and neck, excessive blinking, a breathy or choking voice, hand cramps, or a twisted foot. No fewer than 250,000 Americans are living with dystonia. Estimates suggest that 70% of patients are misdiagnosed prior to a dystonia diagnosis.

WHEN: Saturday, October 5, 2019. Registration opens at 8:00 AM. Event begins at 9:30 AM.

WHERE: Toledo Zoo & Aquarium, 2 Hippo Way, Toledo, OH

WHO: Kristin Cinglie of Monroe, MI is organizing the Toledo Dystonia Zoo Walk to promote greater awareness and to bring together individuals and families affected by dystonia in the local area. Cinglie was diagnosed with dystonia in 2012 after years of misdiagnosis. A chemical engineer and lifelong athlete, she began noticing severe cramping and tightness in her leg and shoulders while training for a half marathon. Today, Cinglie experiences chronic, painful muscle spasms in her neck, torso, leg, arm, and feet. She often needs a cane to walk, and experiences debilitating headaches. Cinglie  hopes the Toledo Zoo Walk may yield interest in a local dystonia support group.

The Dystonia Medical Research Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to advancing research for improved dystonia treatments and ultimately a cure, promoting awareness, and supporting the well-being of affected individuals and families.

A stitch in time: Tapestry immortalizes "Game of Thrones"

Sep 21, 2019

BAYEUX, France — Famously, Arya Stark always preferred her sword Needle to needlework. Still, even she would be impressed with the giant tapestry now on show in France that recounts the plot of "Game of Thrones" in glorious and, of course, gory and salacious detail. With the award-winning saga about power struggles in mythical Westeros poised for more success at the Emmy Awards on Sunday, the tapestry's unveiling this month in the Normandy town of Bayeux could hardly be better-timed. The show's 32 nominations broke a single-year record. Fans who have flocked in their thousands to see the embroidered artwork...

Shootings and shock value: Hoodies, PSA use similar tactics

Sep 21, 2019

NEW YORK — In a breezy back-to-school video spot, angelic children describe their beloved new headphones, sneakers, skateboard. Soon, though, a disturbing reality dawns on the viewer: Those cherished new belongings are merely tools to foil a school shooter stalking the children. And in a show last week, the fashion brand Bstroy offered a sort of back-to-school vision of its own, with models showing off hoodies emblazoned with the names of four schools touched by mass shootings, rent by what appeared to be bullet holes. Both used shock value to make a point about gun violence — and both are...

Galifianakis and Aukerman on 'Between 2 Ferns: The Movie'

Sep 21, 2019

NEW YORK — Some Netflix titles involve anguished discussion over whether the movie will also get a substantial theatrical release. This was not the case for "Between Two Ferns: The Movie." "Netflix was like: Do we even want to put this on our platform? Maybe it should be a ringtone," jokes Zach Galifianakis, the celebrity-mocking star of the internet series and film. But for many, the release of "Between Two Ferns: The Movie" is a cinematic event of mammoth significance. It promises a feature-film feast of a rare comedy candy that, since its 2008 inception, has been only dispersed randomly...

WASHINGTON — It'll be an al fresco Rose Garden soiree for Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison as the White House throws its first state dinner in more than a year. President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump are hosting Morrison for a state visit on Friday, including a pomp-filled arrival ceremony on the South Lawn and meetings with Trump and his staff. The night ends with an opulent state dinner beneath the stars in the Rose Garden, just outside the Oval Office. Australian pro golfer Greg Norman, a friend of Trump's, says he'll be among the guests. NEW YORK — Apple's iOS 13 software update comes with plenty of privacy enhancements — but in some cases, only if you take the time to understand how they work. Among the changes: You'll be able to sign in to third-party services with your Apple ID account rather than Facebook's or Google's. You'll also get more notices and warnings about apps tapping location data. The free update is available for existing iPhones on Thursday and will come with new iPhone 11 models out Friday.
